 Types of Mental Health Disorders

There are various conditions seen as mental illnesses. Here are the most common types of mental health disorders:

Impulse control and addiction disorders:

People suffering from this disorder are not able to resist urges or impulses especially to perform certain actions that could harm them or others. Common examples of this disorders are Pyromania- starting fires,compulsive gambling and kleptomania- stealing. Drug and alcohol are popular objects of addictions. Most times, people suffering from this disorder tend to ignore responsibilities and relationships, because they become so engrossed with the objects of their addiction.

Anxiety disorders:

This is one of the types of mental health disorders where people respond to some objects or situations with fear and dread. They also experience some physical signs of anxiety or panic like rapid heartbeat and sweating. Usually, this disorder is diagnosed when the person’s response is not suitable for the situation or if the persons response is uncontrolled. Also, the disorder is diagnosed if the person’s normal functioning is interfered with anxiety.Some examples of this disorders are: specific phobias, generalized anxiety disorder, social anxiety disorder, and panic disorder.

Psychotic disorders:

This type of Mental Health Disorder is usually characterized by distorted thinking and awareness. There are two major symptoms of this disorders and they are:

hallucinations — seeing images or sounds that are imagined and not real, like hearing voices and delusions, these are imagined beliefs that the person suffering from this disorder see as true, despite the evidence that indicates the contrary. Another example of a psychotic disorder is schizophrenia.

Eating disorders:

This disorders is characterized with extreme emotions, attitudes, and behaviors related to weight and food. Common examples of this disorders include: binge eating disorder, Anorexia nervosa, and bulimia nervosa.

Mood disorders:

Mood disorders is also known as effective disorders. It is characterized by persistent feelings of sadness or periods of unhappiness, or fluctuations from extreme sadness to extreme happiness. Some of the common mood disorders are bipolar disorder, cyclothymic disorder and depression.

Personality disorders:

People suffering from personality disorders possess extreme and inflexible personality traits that are usually distressing to the person and most times hinder their effectiveness at work, school, or social relationships. Also, their patterns of behavior and thinking differs significantly from the expectations of society. This symptoms also interfere with the person’s normal functioning. Common examples are obsessive-compulsive personality disorder, paranoid personality disorder and antisocial personality disorder.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD):

This disorder can develop as a result of a terrifying event or trauma like physical or sexual assault, natural disaster or the unexpected loss of a loved one. People suffering from this disorder tend to be emotionally numb and they usually have persistent and frightening memories and thoughts of the traumatic event

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD):

The common indicators of people with this type of disorders includes persistent thoughts or fears that results in them performing various rituals or routines. The disturbing thoughts are referred to as obsessions, and the rituals are referred to as compulsions. A practical example is one who washes his or her hands constantly due to the unreasonable fear of germs.
